SEO writing is one of the fastest freelance skills to turn into remote income: you need clear writing, a working grasp of search intent, and three solid samples. Beginner rates start around $0.05 a word; specialists charge $0.30 or more, or price by project. Here's the path I'd take from zero.
- Core skills: search intent, on-page basics, briefing/outlining, and editing for clarity.
- You can start with three self-published samples — no clients required to begin.
- First clients come from niche blogs, one job board, and referrals — not from waiting.
- Move from per-word to per-project and retainers, and niche down to raise rates.

What SEO writing actually is
SEO writing is creating content that ranks in search and is genuinely useful to the reader. It's not keyword-stuffing. Modern practice — and Google's own guidance — is about matching search intent, demonstrating first-hand experience and expertise, and structuring content so both people and search engines can parse it. You're writing for a human first, then making sure a crawler can understand it.
If it wouldn't help a real reader, no amount of "optimisation" will keep it ranking. That's the whole job in one sentence.
The skills to build first
- Search intent — is the query informational, commercial, transactional or navigational? Write to match.
- Keyword mapping — one primary topic per page, related terms and questions woven in naturally.
- On-page basics — a clear title, logical H2/H3 structure, descriptive links, a meta description, useful internal links.
- Briefing & outlining — never start writing cold; build the outline against the top results and the questions people actually ask.
- Editing — short sentences, scannable sections, front-loaded answers for featured snippets and AI overviews.
Google's "Creating helpful content" and SEO Starter Guide are the primary sources — read them before any paid course.
Building a portfolio from zero
- Pick a niche you know — a hobby, a past job, a place you've lived.
- Write three articles that target real, low-competition queries in that niche. Full structure: intro that answers the query, H2 sections, an FAQ.
- Publish them — a free Medium/Substack, a cheap one-page site, or a Google Doc portfolio.
- That's enough to start pitching. Real client work replaces the samples fast.
Getting your first clients
- Niche blogs and small SaaS — email 10 a week with a specific idea, not a generic "I write SEO content".
- One job board — pick a single platform and apply consistently rather than spreading thin.
- Agencies — content and SEO agencies constantly need reliable writers; being on time and on brief beats being brilliant and flaky.
- Referrals — ask every client, after a good delivery, if they know one other person who needs writing.

FAQ
How do I become a freelance SEO writer with no experience?
Pick a niche you know, write and publish three well-structured sample articles targeting real low-competition queries, then pitch niche blogs and agencies with specific ideas. Client work quickly replaces the samples.
How much do freelance SEO writers earn?
Beginners typically earn $0.04–$0.10 per word. Intermediate writers charge $0.10–$0.20, and specialists charge $0.20–$0.40+ per word or $300–$1,000+ per article. Retainers for one client commonly run $1,500–$6,000+ a month.
Do I need an SEO certification to get clients?
No. Clients hire on writing quality, reliability and results. Reading Google's own documentation, publishing samples, and getting testimonials from early work matters far more than a paid certificate.
Can you do SEO writing as a digital nomad?
Yes — it needs only a laptop and internet, work is asynchronous, and clients are global. It's one of the most common income sources among working nomads.
About the author. I'm Alexandre. I've been running an online business from Southeast Asia, Europe and Latin America since I left a desk job, and I write the guides on Start Digital Nomad from wherever I'm based that month. This is what I actually do — not theory — but I'm not a lawyer or a tax adviser, so treat the legal and tax sections as a starting point and confirm your own situation with a professional.
