A portable monitor is worth carrying if you stay in one place for weeks and you work in spreadsheets, code or design. If you move every few days, it'll spend its life adding weight to your bag. Before buying a model, decide which of the three types you actually need.
The three types
- Ultralight 14 inch. Around 600 g, thin, and usually powered by one USB-C cable. Lenovo's ThinkVision M14 is the well known example, at around USD 280 in recent listings. It's the best fit for a backpack.
- Budget 15.6 inch. Brands like Arzopa, Cocopar and VisionOwl sit around USD 100 to 140 and roughly 650 g to 800 g. They're fine for a second screen of documents and chat, with dimmer panels.
- Large or OLED. Models at 16 inches and up give you a proper second desk but often pass 900 g. They suit people who stay put for months.
Prices and weights differ between listings, so check the maker's own page before you buy.
What to check
- Weight with the cover. The case can add a lot, and manufacturers often quote the panel alone.
- One cable. It should run on USB-C from your laptop, and your laptop's port needs to support video out.
- Brightness. Look for 300 nits or more if you work near windows.
- Stand. A flimsy folding cover is the most common complaint, and a small separate stand may be worth it.
- Battery drain. A monitor powered by your laptop will shorten your day away from a socket.
For gaming
A high refresh rate is nice on a monitor, but most handhelds can't hold it in demanding games. For a Steam Deck or similar, a 60 Hz screen and a small dock will do. Think about whether the TV in your rental would do the job at no extra weight.
What I'd do
Rent the setup before you buy one. Spend a week at a coworking space with a screen and notice whether you actually use it. If you do, buy the lightest 14 inch you can afford, since the one you bring beats the larger one you leave behind. It sits alongside the rest of the kit in the small apartment desk setup.
