Ignore the headline number. Battery claims are measured under gentle conditions, and what you need to know is whether a laptop gets through six to eight hours of real work with the screen at a usable brightness.

Why the claim and your day don't match

Manufacturers typically quote local video playback or light web browsing at low brightness. Your day has video calls, thirty tabs, cloud sync and a screen turned up against a bright window. A laptop rated at 18 hours can easily deliver half that. Apple's own range for the MacBook Air, 15 to 18 hours depending on the task, shows how far the number moves even in a controlled test.

How to read reviews

  1. Look for a test at a stated brightness, usually around 150 to 200 nits.
  2. Find the review of your exact configuration. A high-resolution screen or a faster chip can cost hours.
  3. Look at watt-hours, and treat them as a rough guide: efficient chips can do more with less.
  4. Search for owner reports after a year, since batteries lose capacity with age.

What drains a laptop fastest

  • Video calls, especially with the camera on and background effects running.
  • Screen brightness. It's often the single biggest draw.
  • Cloud sync and browser tabs running in the background.
  • A portable monitor powered by the laptop.
  • Using a hotspot, which also drains your phone.

Stretch the day

  • Drop brightness until it's comfortable rather than maximum.
  • Pause cloud sync while you're away from a socket.
  • Use your phone for calls when you don't need to share a screen.
  • Sit near an outlet for the second half of the day, since you'll know the good seats after a week.
  • Carry a small USB-C power bank under 100 Wh for planes and long days. It must go in your carry-on.

Keep it healthy

Heat ages batteries more than anything else, and a nomad's laptop lives in hot cafes and hotter buses. Don't leave it in the sun or charging on a soft surface. If your laptop has a charge limit setting, use it on long plugged-in days. The numbers on specific models are in the laptop buying guide.
