You can stream from a rental with kit that fits in a daypack, as long as you sort out audio first and check the upload speed before you book. Viewers will forgive a soft image far sooner than bad sound or a stream that keeps dropping.

The kit

  • A compact USB microphone. This is your most important purchase, so spend here first.
  • A small clip-on key light. A cheap light does more for your image than an expensive camera in a dark room.
  • Your phone or a compact webcam as the camera.
  • A short Ethernet cable and a USB-C adapter, for rentals with a router you can reach.
  • A data SIM with a generous plan, so your phone can act as a backup hotspot.

The number that matters: upload

Twitch's usual target for 1080p at 60 fps is 6,000 kbps, and that's the bitrate alone. Leave headroom and aim for a steady 10 Mbps of upload or more. YouTube accepts higher bitrates, so check its current live encoder settings if that's your platform. If the line can't hold that, drop to 720p or 900p at 60 fps. A stable lower resolution looks better than a 1080p stream that stutters.

Choosing the rental

  1. Ask the host for a speed test screenshot showing upload, from the room you'd use.
  2. Ask whether the router is in the unit or shared with the building.
  3. Ask whether fibre is installed. Many listings mean a shared connection when they say fast wifi.
  4. Book a short first stay, and run a private test stream before you commit to a schedule.

Sound and neighbours

Hard floors and bare walls make every room echo. Stream with your back to soft furnishings, hang a blanket if you must, and speak close to the mic. Check the house rules too, and don't stream at midnight through a thin wall.

When the line drops

Set up your hotspot in advance rather than in a panic. Keep it connected to a second network profile in your streaming software, and tell your audience what happens if you vanish for a minute. In cities with regular power cuts, keep the laptop charged so that it can carry on running on battery. See reliable internet anywhere for the wider setup.
