A Framework is a great laptop for people who care about repair and a slightly awkward one for people on the move. You can replace almost any part, but only if you can get that part delivered to wherever you happen to be.

What's appealing

Framework's whole idea is that you own the machine. You can swap the battery, screen, keyboard, ports and mainboard yourself, and upgrade instead of replacing. For someone who keeps a laptop for many years, that's a real virtue. It's also a good fit for Linux users, and the modular port cards let you choose the ports you carry.

The problem for nomads

A repair is only as fast as the delivery. In your home country, a new part arrives in days. In a rental in Tbilisi or Da Nang, you're dealing with customs, an address that may not work, and a shop that has never seen one. A MacBook or ThinkPad is easier to fix on the road because you can walk into a service centre or a repair street in most big cities.

The 2026 picture

The Framework Laptop 13 Pro launched this year with a 74 Wh battery, about 22 percent larger than before, and reviewers report much better battery life. It weighs about 1.4 kg, more than a MacBook Air or an X1 Carbon. The launch price started at USD 1,199 for the DIY edition, and later coverage reports sharp rises as memory and component costs climbed, so check the current price on Framework's site.

Who should buy one

  • You run Linux and want a laptop designed with that in mind.
  • You keep hardware for many years and hate throwing it away.
  • You have a base you return to, or someone who can forward parts to you.

If you do, carry these

  • The small screwdriver that ships with it.
  • A spare port card or two, since they're tiny and they're the most likely thing to wear out.
  • A delivery plan. A mailing address back home makes everything easier.

If weight and battery come first, buy from the light Windows shortlist or a MacBook Air instead. Repairability is lovely, and most people will value a lighter bag more often.
